first things into the field

Today we planted red onions and peas into the ground.  The onions were starts that were planted last month in the greenhouse and we direct seeded the peas.  It was a group effort, John, Stacy, Briis, Sam, Flora, Stella, and me!  The most difficult part was getting the beds ready.  We are planting into a bed that has never been used before, so although John went through it with the tractor a few times, there were still a lot of dirt clods, weeds, and crab grass to get out.  In the afternoon we heard thunder in the distance.  The clouds seemed to be going on either side of us and leaving a clear strip for us.  We finished up just as it began to sprinkle.  We’re hoping to get rain the next few days to germinate those seeds and so that we don’t have to lug water out to this field.  It doesn’t have irrigation…yet.
